Mom and dad always get nervous when sister or I take rides from strangers.

I was going to drive to LA last weekend but lost by license somewhere during the walk from the laundry room to the car. Since I like to speed, I thought it’d be better to be a passenger with a licensed driver and found one through craigslist’s rideshare. When I told my parents, they responded with, “Who are you riding with? Do you know them? Are they guys or girls? You have to be careful. I don’t know if you should do that. You should take the bus.”

I found my license the following day, excused myself from being a passenger, and started my own carpool instead. My parents’ response, “Oh, you’re driving. That’s great. When are you getting here?”

They mind when I’m a passenger but not when I’m the driver.

My parents are ok with me driving your child off the side of the road and into a ditch. My parents are not ok with your child driving me off the side of the road and into a ditch.

Trust. It’s what’s for dinner…at least at my house.
